We walked up to Exit Glacier, then followed the Seward Highway. Glacial lakes along the road ran that bright turquoise.
Whittier
Whittier sits on Prince William Sound, on the far side of Maynard Mountain. The only road in is the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel — about 2.5 miles, one lane, shared with the railroad, timed in each direction. Almost the whole town lives in one building, Begich Towers, a leftover from the Army years. We went through, walked the harbor, and came back out the same hole in the mountain.
We slept in Anchorage. Early start for the Glenn Highway.
September 11 — Anchorage → Valdez · 300 mi · 5 h
We took the Glenn Highway: Matanuska Glacier, Thompson Pass, Worthington Glacier, Keystone Canyon, Valdez Glacier Lake. High open ice, then a canyon of waterfalls, then the harbor.
